History of Zurich

Zurich has been colonized since the early Roman times. In the early 9th century, the beginning of Zurich was found. Zurich was formed with the union of the royal house in Zurich, Frau Munster, Gross Munster, and the free men community. The development of the Zurich town underwent different stages such as gradual replacing of power, admittance of craft guilds, granting of equal political rights, and reception of numerous immigrants. The Swiss Reformation was formed and Zurich has become its focus. Zurich was then recognized during the early times by the silk industry.

During the early times, the places beside lakes were being discovered. A part of the Zurich was discovered as one of the lake side towns like the Zurich Pressehaus and Mozartstrasse. In the early 1800’s, these places were then settled as a part of the lake Zurich. Lake Zurich has become one of the border points for Gaul and Italy when travelling their goods. Lake Zurich has also become a part of the tax collecting point for Gaul when they are bringing in their products being carried by large ships.

The Roman castle being present during that time introduced Christianity in the place. During the 7th century, the Roman castle agreed on a settlement regarding the Swiss plateau, which describes the mission of Columba. On the 8th century, Ziurichi was mentioned in the settlement.

During the time of the Alemmania, Zurich is one of the towns being ruled by them. By this time, a new castle, the Carolingian Castle was built to replace the old Roman castle. Louis the German founded the Carolingian Castle, followed by the Fraumunster. He then gifted the Benedictine convent to some areas, Zurich included. The Benedictine convent has now become under his authority.

In the year 1218, Zurich has become the reichsunmittelbar. City wall was built during the same time, and the Carolingian Castle was then used as a quarrying area. Fraumunster was then promoted to Duchess. A mayor was then assigned during this time to take care of the city. During this time, the city follows the rules of the Zunfte.
During the 14th century, the Codex Manesse was written and illustrated in Zurich. This gives the kings to protect their rights over their tenants, and churches had jurisdiction to the community. In the year 1218, the town has become an imperial city. During this time, abbess was the lady of Zurich.

In the year 1291 of October, Zurich made an alliance with Schwyz and Uri trying to fight against the town of Winterthur but failed. Zurich then allied with Austria and had great connections. In the year 1315, Zurich fought against the Swiss Confederates.

A new constitution started, and a little council was formed. Zurich made good connections with the little council and the Great council. This caused embarrassment to both parties. In the 14th century, the town was able to rule some part of their town.

Zurich later joined the Swiss confederation in the year 1351. They became the fifth member of the confederation. Zurich was expelled from the confederation in 1440 and was re-admitted in 1450.

During the 15th century, Zurich was able to increase its territory and improve its position in the confederation. Because of the thirst for territory, the Old Zurich War took place, where Zurich was beaten. During the Burgundian war in 1512, Zurich took part in the campaign.

Hans Waldmann, the leader of the Zurich men, later became the ruler of the Swiss confederation. Many changes occurred and Zurich became the capital of the league.

During the 17th century, the republic of Zurich was formed.
